How to Calculate Overtime Value?
Calculating overtime value is important to ensure fair compensation for additional work performed. We can break the calculation into 2 simple steps, explained below:
Step 1: Calculate Normal Hour Value
Conceptually, overtime value is the normal hour value plus a percentage increase. To calculate overtime value, first you need to calculate normal hour value. This is done by dividing base salary by number of normal hours agreed in contract. For example:
Monthly Contract Example
If your salary is R$4000 and you work 160 hours per month, then normal hour value is calculated as: R$4000 / 160 = R$25
Weekly Contract Example
If your salary is R$1000 and you work 40 hours per week, then normal hour value is calculated as: R$1000 / 40 = R$25
Step 2: Apply Overtime Increase
Labor legislation defines a percentage increase for overtime, which varies by country. Generally, a 50% increase over normal hour value is applied for each overtime hour worked.
Assuming the increase is 50% and using normal hour value calculated in previous example, each overtime hour value will be:
Overtime Value = R$25 + (50% of R$25)
= R$25 + R$12.5
= R$37.5
