Understanding Fractions

This fraction calculator allows you to perform basic arithmetic operations (addition, subtraction, multiplication, division) with fractions. Simply enter your fractions, select the operation, and get the result. The calculator also provides simplified results. A fraction represents a part of a whole. It consists of two parts: the numerator (top number) and the denominator (bottom number). For example, in the fraction 3/4, 3 is the numerator and 4 is the denominator.

How to add fractions?

1) Adding fractions with the same denominator

This is the simplest case. If the fractions have the same denominator, just add the numerators and keep the denominator.

Example: 3/7 + 2/7 = (3 + 2)/7 = 5/7

2) Adding fractions with different denominators

To add fractions with different denominators, first find a common denominator. This is done by calculating the least common multiple (LCM) of both denominators. Then add the fractions as in the previous case. An alternative method is to multiply the denominators to find a common denominator, then cross-multiply the numerators with the corresponding denominators.

Example: 1/2 + 1/3 = (1×3)/6 + (1×2)/6 = (3 + 2)/6 = 5/6
